Story of Java

The history of Java Island is as rich and varied as its cultural tapestry and natural sceneries. Java is the most populous island in Indonesia and the globe, with about 140 million people. Its history is millennia long, formed by a combination of indigenous cultures, Indian and Chinese influences, and European imperialism.

Java’s history dates back to ancient times, when it was populated by numerous Austronesian tribes. The island witnessed the birth and collapse of several mighty kingdoms, including the Tarumanagara, Mataram, and Majapahit empires. These dynasties left outstanding architectural marvels, including the Borobudur and Prambanan temples, which are now UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Borobudur Temple

Situated close to the town of Magelang in Central Java, Indonesia, lies Borobudur, one of the most famous and important Buddhist temples in the world. Constructed in the 9th century during the Sailendra dynasty, this UNESCO World Heritage Site welcomes millions of tourists each.

Built in the shape of a gigantic stupa, which represents the construction of the cosmos in Buddhist cosmology, the temple is a masterwork of Mahayana Buddhist architecture. It is made up of nine stacked platforms with a central dome on top, and it is decorated with 500 Buddha statues and more than 2,500 finely carved relief panels. The reliefs show diverse facets of Javanese culture and Buddhist teachings, together with events from the life of the Buddha.

Breksi Cliff

Yogyakarta, Indonesia is home to the picturesque limestone cliff known as Breksi Cliff, often referred to as Tebing Breksi.
